"What prepared me at MCLA for my internship at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and graduate school was the rigor of my physics classes. I would credit Dr. Adrienne Wootters in particular with teaching us to work hard and she was always willing to make time to work on problems with us when we couldn’t get them."

NORTH ADAMS, MA – The Athletic Department and the Office of Student Development at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will host guest speaker Mark Sterner with “DUI: A Powerful Lesson,” on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Amsler Campus Center gymnasium.

The event is free and open to the public.

Sterner will speak about the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol. The former Johnson and Wales University (Rhode Island) student was on a spring break trip in Florida when he and three fraternity brothers were in a drunk driving accident. Sterner was the driver.

After recovering from his injuries, instead of being the first person in his family to graduate from college, Sterner was the first to go to prison, after he was convicted of three counts of felony manslaughter.

In “DUI: A Powerful Lesson,” Sterner shares the decisions that changed his life and ended the lives of his friends. He will show videotape footage his friends made of their spring break, ending just minutes before the crash.

“Since Spring Break and warm weather are right around the corner, we want to remind our students to make better, safer choices,” said Holly McGovern, coordinator of the CHOICES program, and head women’s basketball coach and the assistant soccer coach at MCLA.

“Through the NCAA CHOICES grant, MCLA athletics has taken a proactive approach for education students about the dangers of alcohol abuse. The Mark Sterner program takes a sobering look at the dangers of DUI and how one wrong choice can change lives in an instant,” said Scott Nichols, MCLA director of athletics.
