"I received a great education from MCLA that laid the groundwork for me to succeed at law school. I use the skills I learned at MCLA, especially in the area of research and writing, on a daily basis and still speak with many of my former professors. It is not every school where you can create such a lasting bond with the professors and community. The strong community bond found at MCLA was a factor in my husband (Scott Lord ’98) and my decision to attend MCLA and our desire to remain involved with MCLA after graduation."

NORTH ADAMS, MA – French freelance journalist Mariane Pearl, a reporter and columnist for Glamour magazine, will speak at this spring’s Hardman Lecture Series event at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Wednesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Church Street Center.
The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mariane Pearl is the widow of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in early 2002. She will discuss “A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl.”

Born Mariane Van Neyenhoff in Clinchy, Haute-de-Seine, France, Pearl was raised in Paris. As a young woman, she met her husband while he was on assignment in Paris. They married in August 1999, and moved to Mumbai, India, where Daniel was the South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal.

The couple later traveled to Karachi, Pakistan, to cover aspects of the war on terrorism. It was in Karachi that Daniel was kidnapped and later killed. Mariane was pregnant at the time, and their son, Adam Daniel, was born in Paris three months later.

Pearl’s memoir, “A Mighty Heart,” which deals with the events surrounding her husband’s kidnapping and assassination, was adapted for a film of the same name.
She is a practicing Nichiren Buddhist and a member of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist association that promotes world peace and individual happiness.

The Hardman Lecture Series is made possible through the generosity of the Hardman Family Endowment. For more information, go to http://www.mcla.edu/About_MCLA/Hardman_Lecture_Series/ .
