MCLA Scholarships
Thanks to many of our friends, numerous students, who would otherwise be unable to afford college, have been able to achieve their dream. In additions to financial aid, the College currently awards nearly 100 scholarships to talented and deserving young men and women - and the list of scholarships continues to grow. Many of the awards were established by alumni and friends of the institution, often named in honor of deceased members of the College's family. All of them are earmarked to help future students succeed at MCLA. Listed below are many of the scholarships currently active. Thomas D. and Susan Aceto Scholarship -- named in honor of the tenth President of the College, Thomas D. Aceto and his wife, Susan. It was established by Henry and Mary Flynt in recognition of the Aceto's contributions to this institution and is given to an out-of-state entering freshman.
The Aceto Family Scholarship -- established in 1993 by Thomas and Susan Aceto to honor Henry and Gilda Aceto, parents of Thomas Aceto, tenth President of the College. It recognizes students are accomplished in the area of fine & performing arts.
The Alumni Scholarship -- established by alumni of North Adams State College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to support qualified students who are active in College extra-curricular activities and who demonstrate financial need.
Berkshire County Scholarship Fund -- established in 1996 through the generosity of Greylock Credit Union to support deserving Berkshire County students.
Biology Achievement Scholarship -- established to recognize achievement in health studies.
Francis H. Bissaillon Memorial Drama Scholarship -- established in honor of Francis H. Bissaillon, a 1962 alumnus who was killed while serving his country in Vietnam. It honors a student who excels in theatre.
Board of Trustees Scholarship -- established in 1982 by the Board of Trustees for students with high scholastic averages and financial need.
Nicholas and Ruth Boraski Scholarship -- established by Nicholas Boraski, a retired General Electric Company executive and former member of the Board of Regents of Higher Education, and his wife, Ruth. It is awarded to English/Communications majors.
Centennial Endowment for International Study and Travel Scholarship -- established in 1993 by Catherine Tisinger, ninth president of the institution, to support students who wish to study abroad.
Heather M. Fischlein Memorial Scholarship -- established by friends of Heather, who was a Resident Advisor, and is intended to motivate, reward and provide financial aid to resident advisors.
Andrew S. Flagg Art Scholarship -- named for a former mentor of the Art Department and the 6th President of the College, it recognizes a student who demonstrates a proficiency in visual art.
Bernadette Marie Foley Class of 1928 Scholarship -- established in 1997 by a member of the family of Bernadette Marie Foley '28, who died in 1989. The endowed scholarship is a memorial to the love of education that Ms. Foley acquired while a student at this institution. It is intended to motivate and reward an incoming student who is preparing to teach at the elementary level.
Jenny Rosenberg Fyler Scholarship -- established in 1987 through a bequest from Carlton D. Fyler in memory of his wife, Jenny Fyler. Mrs. Fyler was a member of the class of 1913, a long-time supporter of the Alumni Association and an early member of the Century Club. It is awarded to students of high academic caliber and financial need.
James A. Hardman, Jr. Scholarship -- established in 1992 by family and friends of James A. Hardman, Jr., former editor and publisher of the North Adams Transcript. The award honors the memory of Hardman, whose impact on individuals and the communities of Northern Berkshire was significant.
Harlequin Drama Scholarship -- established to recognize a student who has demonstrated excellence in the area of theatre.
Health Achievement Scholarship -- established to recognize achievement in this field.
Todd Robert Herman Scholarship -- established in 1988 by the parents of Todd Robert Herman, a former student, to reflect his interests in theatre.
IEP Enduring Student Scholarship -- established to support and facilitate the retention of under-represented students in the effort to maintain the College's cultural diversity.
Jane Kerr Kahlert Scholarship -- established in 1987 from a bequest of the estate of Jane Kerr Kahlert, a graduate of the college, to recognize students in good academic standing with financial need.
Kappa Omicron Endowed Scholarship -- established in 1997 by the Kappa Omicron sorority in memory of their fellow sister, Kathy M. Shea who lost her battle with cancer in 1994. It is awarded to students majoring in science, computer science or mathematics.
Margaret, Frances, Nellie Karrey Scholarship -- established in 1993 by Nellie Karrey '31 in memory of her sisters, Frances and Margaret, who attended this institution and pursued successful careers as teachers. It is awarded to students in good standing with the College.
The Alan Larese Memorial Scholarship -- established in 1998 by the Dexter Foundation in memory of their colleague, Alan Larese, for entering students majoring in computer science.
Iris Cavazza Lilly Memorial Fund Scholarship -- established in 1984 by Victoria L. Cavazza in memory of Iris Cavazza Lilly, a teacher at the former Mark Hopkins Campus School. The award is intended for a student who excels in mathematics.
Edmund K. Luddy Memorial Scholarship -- established to honor Professor Edmund K. Luddy who had a distinguished academic career that spanned more than three decades. The fund was established in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the College and is given to history students who demonstrate academic excellence.
Joseph G. Mansfield Memorial Scholarship -- established in 1984 in memory of Joseph G. Mansfield, a faculty member at the College, and honors students who excel in television production.
Massachusetts Society of CPAs Annual Student Scholarship -- established by the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants to recognize students with high scholastic achievement in the area of accounting.
MCLA Foundation Scholarship -- established in 1993 to provide financial aid to qualified students from Berkshire County High Schools.
MCLA Scholarship -- established to help students with financial aid and recognize academic achievement.
Helen Neel Memorial Scholarship -- established by the estate of Helen Neel, a former member of the Department of English/Communications, to recognize a student who demonstrates high academic scholarship.
The Ames Samuel Pierce Fund -- established by the estate of Ames Samuel Pierce, a former faculty member in the Department of History, Political Science and Geography, to encourage excellence in historical and political studies.
Thomas & Jean Price Memorial Scholarship -- established in 1986 by Thomas Price, Jr., former professor of anthropology, and his wife, Jean, to encourage and support students enrolled in traditional liberal arts programs.
Psychology Department Scholarship -- established by the faculty within the Department of Psychology for students in good academic standing.
Wilfred J. & Marion Quintin Music Scholarship -- established in the 1970s by Marion Quintin in memory of her late husband. It is designed to recognize a member of the junior or senior class who has improved significantly in music during his or her College years.
Lee Hamilton Ransford Scholarship -- established by Dorothy (Giusti) '64 and Charles Ransford to honor the memory of their son, Lee Hamilton Ransford. It recognizes students who display creativity in any of its various disciplines.
Vivian Dix Redman Scholarship -- established by the music faculty in the Department of Fine & Performing Arts, in memory of a former music department faculty member, for outstanding music students.
Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work Department Award -- established to support excellence in scholarship and contributions to the Department of Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work at MCLA.
Anna Ruth Chase Spurr Memorial Scholarship -- established in 1987 as a memorial to Anna Ruth Chase Spurr, a graduate of the class of 1930, by her husband, Colonel Jerome Lyon Spurr. It was created to honor Mrs. Spurr's cherished memories of this institution with regard to her classmates and the faculty that inspired her love of teaching.
Raymond C. Sullivan Scholarship -- established in 1986 to recognize a student who best exemplifies the characteristics that most typified Dr. Raymond Sullivan and his commitment to education. Dr. Sullivan was a long-time member of the faculty and was serving as acting president of this institution at the time of his death.
Third World Study Scholarship -- established in 1986 by Charles Mark, professor emeritus of sociology. It is intended to provide financial assistance to a student who wishes to conduct field observations and research in a Third World Country or American ethnic enclave with which the student lacks personal familiarity.
P. Randolph Trabold Photo-Journalism Scholarship -- established to recognize a student who excels in photojournalism. It is given in memory of the late Randy Trabold, distinguished news photographer for the North Adams Transcript.
The Paul E. Tsongas Scholarship -- established by The Council of State College Presidents and the Board of Higher Education to honor the life and works of Senator Paul Tsongas. It recognizes outstanding students.
Jane Ruth White Endowed Scholarship -- established by Mrs. Whites' sons in 1993 to recognize non-traditional students.
John Morrison White Endowed Scholarship -- established in 1989 by Morrison Berkshire of North Adams in memory of John M. White, founder, for incoming freshmen who reside in North Adams.
