Structure of the Program
Qualifying for the Program
The Mass College Honors Progam concentrates on a student's current potential and future accomplishments; it is not a simply a recognition for past achievements. Certainly, all incoming students with proven potential and noteworthy academic records will be invited to join the program. But students with all sorts of academic backgrounds who believe themselves capable of working at an honors level are encouraged to consult with their advisor or with the Honors Director about applying for the Program.
Still other students may be nominated for Honors by a guidance counselor or high school teacher or, for those with some college experience, by a faculty member.
In the final analysis, we are less concerned with your academic work
elsewhere than how you perform -- and how you intend to perform -- at this college. We are always ready to welcome students into the program who wish to stretch their academic wings.
Finding the Right Courses for You...
Each semester the College offers several Honors courses on a range of interdisciplinary topics, and during pre-registration Honors students have the first opportunity to enroll in them. The courses change every semester, so you should be able to find courses in every subject matter over the course of your time in college.
To help you plan ahead, the Program publishes a forecast of upcoming courses every year, but if you wish to pursue a particular subject or research interest, please talk it over with the Director. The proposed course offerings will be revised to meet general student interest, and there are also opportunities for "student-designed courses" and for Independent Study courses in the Honors program.
Graduating with All-College Honors and as a "Commonwealth Scholar"
To graduate with All-College Honors from Mass College a
student will have successfully completed no fewer than six honors
courses with a grade of "B" or better and have attained an overall grade point average of 3.4 or better.
Once the program receives approval to join the Commonwealth Honors Program, a student may earn recognition as a "Commonwealth Scholar" by completing a capstone project (thesis or creative project) in the senior year.
