HONORS BOOK COURSE -- FALL, 2006

In Fall, 2006, The Director's Book Course will focus on the book,
The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag
by Kang Chol-Hwan, Pierre Rigoulot, Chor-Hwan Kang, and Yair Reiner.

The Director's Book course is a seven-week pass/fail discussion course open to students in the Honors Program. It concentrates on discussing various aspects and dimensions of that single book during a brief seven-week period. This fall, we will be reading The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag. The course will meet for one evening each week for only six weeks. The first meeting is on Thursday, September 14 in the Honors Center.

In addition to the on-campus discussions, the we have made plans for the course participants to travel to UMass/Amherst to hear a lecture by the authors.

Class Schedule:
The first course meeting will Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Honors Center. We will discuss alternative times at the first meeting to see if there are better times that accommodate everyone.
The course ends on October 19.


Sept. 14: Introductions & listening exercises; how to conduct discussions

Sept. 21: Close reading exercise; topic selection for book discussion. Choosing topics for reports/discussions. Discussion focused on specific topics and reports.

Sept. 28: Discussion focused on specific topics and reports.

Oct. 5: Discussion focused on specific topics and reports.

Oct. 12: Possible visit to Commonwealth College pending confirmation of lecture by the author.

Oct. 19: Discussion focused on specific topics and reports.

Oct. 26: Discussion with Prof. Kailai Huang, History Department.
