"Transferring to MCLA was one of the greatest decisions I ever made. Being able to learn from and connect with the faculty and staff equipped me with greater networking capabilities/skills and the opportunity to use them outside of the institution, preparing me for the road ahead. Taking part and engaging in different clubs and organizations on campus helped to shape and guide me for countless opportunities."

Teacher Licensure Opportunities at MCLA

MCLA offers teacher licensure programs at the undergraduate and graduate level in Early Childhood (PreK-2), Elementary (1-6), Middle School (5-8) and Secondary (8-12). Licensure at the middle school level includes: biology, English, general science, history, humanities, mathematics, mathematics/science, physics, and political science/political philosophy. Licensure at the secondary level includes: biology, business, English, history, mathematics, physics, and political science/political philosophy.

In order to obtain an Early Childhood or Elementary teaching license in Massachusetts through MCLA, students at the undergraduate level must complete a major in the arts and sciences and a major in Education. Middle School and Secondary licensure candidates must major in the content area for the license and complete a major in Education. In addition, all students must have a GPA of 2.8, no grade below a C in licensure program courses and pass all MTEL requirements in order to be accepted for the professional semester (student teaching).

Licensure candidates at the graduate level must have a bachelor’s degree with a 3.00 GPA. Prospective candidates with a GPA below 3.00 may be conditionally accepted. Bachelor’s degree transcripts of all graduate candidates will be reviewed for content as it would relate to the license to be obtained. Graduate students may add four “core” courses (please see below) to any licensure program to earn a Master’s in Education degree.

All licensure candidates will complete a minimum of 120 hours of work in a classroom appropriate to the license prior to student teaching.
