Biology
The Biology Department offers a four year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Biology. The curriculum is built upon four foundational courses which explore the field of biology from the molecular and cellular level to the level of populations and ecosystems. In these courses, students seek to understand the origin, evolution, and physiological mechanisms of all forms of life. Advanced courses build upon information learned in the foundational courses and allow students to pursue their own areas of interest. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in independent research with an MCLA faculty member or in another research setting. Research provides students with an invaluable opportunity to use the scientific method to explore biological questions in depth. The research opportunities, in combination with the broad-based liberal arts coursework, provide students with a well-rounded undergraduate experience that will prepare them to make informed career choices. Our graduates have pursued many different career paths, including doctoral programs in the natural and life sciences, teaching, and health science related professions, such as cytotechnology, medical technology and sports medicine. The Biology Department also houses the Environmental Studies Major. Concentrations: Biology, B.A. Biology, Pre-Professional Concentration, B.S. Biology, Sports Medicine Concentration, B.S. Biology, Medical Technology Concentration, B.S. Biology, Cytotechnology Concentration, B.S. Minors: Biology Minor
Chairperson: Ann Billetz, PhD a.billetz@mcla.edu
Teacher Licensure/Certification: Students majoring in biology may opt to pursue initial teacher licensure as an early childhood teacher, elementary teacher, or a middle school teacher. Also, biology majors may pursue initial licensure as a teacher of biology for the middle school or secondary levels. Students seeking any of these licensures must complete a biology major and a licensure program in education.
