"Transferring to MCLA was one of the greatest decisions I ever made. Being able to learn from and connect with the faculty and staff equipped me with greater networking capabilities/skills and the opportunity to use them outside of the institution, preparing me for the road ahead. Taking part and engaging in different clubs and organizations on campus helped to shape and guide me for countless opportunities."

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

ABE~GED~ESOL~TECH classes are held at several community locations.

In Adams, the classes are held at the Adams Memorial Middle School, in classrooms with age appropriate furniture and wall displays. Classes include computer use in the school's technology lab and free Internet access.

In North Adams, the classes are held on the Lower level of the Freel Library on the Campus of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at the corner of Blackinton and Montana Streets. In Williamstown, ESOL Classes are held at the Milne Public Library, located at 1095 Main Street.

All students are eligible to get a photo "ID" from MCLA's Office of Public Safety, which allows access to the computer labs and library. A cafeteria is also located in the Campus Center where students can obtain refreshments. All classrooms and buildings are non-smoking. Smokers may smoke outside in designated areas.

Classes are handicapped accessible, and accommodations for learning, physical or psychological disabilities are available. This program refers students to other local agencies to help learners address and overcome barriers to their education and success. All student information is confidential.

Students in ABE~GED~ESOL~TECH classes are expected to be attentive to the teacher and respectful to others. No alcohol or drugs, weapons, profanity, distracting or abusive behavior or anyone under-the-influence, is permitted in the classroom. Sixteen and seventeen year olds, being minors, must have their parents/guardian's permission to enroll and let the instructor know every time they leave the classroom. To achieve their academic goals, every student needs to focus and concentrate on their learning. A firm commitment to 100% attendance is expected. Contact the coordinator to resolve scheduling or other issues that might prevent you from attending your classes. Each student is also expected to contribute to building a class environment that is respectful and supportive of everyone.

The pace of progress will vary from student to student depending on a variety of factors. But you can learn and achieve real goals this school year. Regular attendance plus out-of-classroom "homework" are the keys to making maximum progress. Each student also sets their goals by completing a learning contract, designed to help you establish a realistic plan to achieve an important goal. Please think seriously about what you want to accomplish this year, then complete and sign your contract. Please try to be as specific as possible.

Good luck in your efforts, stick with it and don't give up! Contact the coordinator for help at any time with achieving your goals or addressing barriers to your progress.
