Class Registration Information
Class Registration and Schedule Adjustments Transfer and first-year students register in June or August (for the fall semester) and January (for the spring semester). Once you are matriculated at MCLA you will register for classes in November (for the spring semester) and March/April (for the fall semester). During the first seven days of the semester, students may add or drop classes after obtaining the signatures of their instructors and advisor. Students may withdraw from a class through the midway point of a semester. In withdrawing from a course, a grade of "W" is entered on the student's transcript and has no effect on GPA. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REGISTRATION When do I register? A "registration code" is on the printed label of your registration form. Use this code to find your date/time of registration by looking up the code on the table in the course schedule. This is the earliest time that you can register. You may also register at any time after your designated slot up through the end of the registration period. You MUST, however, have an advisor’s signature on your registration form before you go to the Registrar’s Office. When do I meet with my advisor? You MUST see your advisor and get his/her signature BEFORE the day/time that you are scheduled to register. BE SURE you get in touch with your advisor to make an appointment well before you can register. How do I know who my advisor is? You can access your advisee report (including the name of your academic advisor) through Student Tools at http://campus.mcla.edu - you should bring a copy of your advisee report with you when you meet with your advisor. If there is no advisor listed, call Advising Services at x5400 or email us at advising@mcla.edu. How do I get in touch with my advisor? All advisors have college phone extensions and most use their First Class email. Go to your First Class desktop and click on “Directories”. What do I do if there is a hold on my registration? The Registrar's Office can tell you what type of hold is on your account. If it involves financial matters, contact the Bursar’s Office at x5230. What about if I get preferred access registration? You must see your advisor as early as possible and get her/his signature on all of your registration materials. Where do I get a copy of the course schedule? They will be available in hard copy in the Mailroom, Registrar's Office and Advising Services. You can also access the course schedule on-line through the Registrar's Office website. What do I need to know about the registration form?
There will only be a single copy of your registration form. Bring this to the meeting with your advisor. You will need to know your First Class ID (A100 number, NOT your social security number) in order to register for classes. In addition to the department code, course number and section number (e.g. PSYC100-02) you MUST enter the five digit “Course Reference Number” (CRN) on the registration form for each course. The CRN codes for each class can be found in the course schedule. What if the courses I want are closed when I get to registration? When you meet with your advisor you should choose alternate courses for your schedule. An academic advisor will be available in the Registrar’s Office from 4-4:45 p.m. each registration day to make recommendations for alternate classes. When do I need instructor or departmental approval to register for a course? Any course that has “instructor approval” or “department approval” as a listed prerequisite (see the course schedule) requires a signature to allow you to register. If you are unsure about whose signature is required, ask your advisor. CHANGES TO THE PUBLISHED CLASS SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED UNDER "ADVISING ALERTS" WHICH CAN BE ACCESSED THROUGH ADVISING SERVICES ON THE CAMPUS CONNECTION WEBPAGE. http://campus.mcla.edu or http://www.mcla.edu/Academics/Academic_Resources/Advising_Services/Advising_Alerts/
