Title III Strengthening Institutions Program Grant
Academic and Technology Infrastructure Enhancement as a Foundation for Professional and Curricular Development Title III News 2006 Annual Performance Report. Title III Project Update During the 2006-2007 academic year, MCLA’s Title III Strengthening Institutions Grant funded the following initiatives: - The Fine & Performing Arts Department used $35,000 in Title III funds to renovate its visual arts studio. Upgrades to two rooms include space expansion, fresh paint, additional electrical outlets, PCs, projection and multimedia equipment, and eighteen work stations with new easels and professional color correcting studio lighting.
- During the summer, seventeen full and part time faculty members received stipends to work with Academic Technology Center staff to improve their skills in technology-mediated instruction. The training included sessions on teaching with blogs and wikis, Blackboard, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.
- The English Communications Department used $30,000 in Title III funds to purchase a complete Avid Non-Linear Editing Laboratory setup and a Hewlett-Packard Multi Media Workstation, both to be used for instruction in video editing and production.
- The Academic Technology Center purchased two pilot Turning Point Student Response System kits for faculty use. This equipment allow students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting real-time responses to interactive questions using a handheld keypad.
- Six additional Bowman Hall classrooms were outfitted with new multimedia equipment, including DVD/VCR players and equipment control panels. Four more classrooms are currently being upgraded.
- Banner Student Information System implementation, including data conversion and staff training, proceeded as planned under partial Title III funding.
Upcoming for 2007-2008: - New equipment for Modern Language instruction, which will also be available for general use.
- Additional Digital Media equipment purchases for the English/Communications Department.
- Title III funded panels and workshops on a variety of subjects, including e-portfolio implementation and student learning outcomes assessment practices.
- Twenty-four thousand dollars in funding for library materials, including textbooks and online resources.
Thanks to Title III funds, Mary Kavanaugh, Coordinator of Academic Technology, joined the staff of the Academic Technology Center in November 2006. Her primary role is to provide training and instructional design support to MCLA faculty in WebCT, First Class, and other classroom technologies.
